Omigod You Guys

Another Openin’

“Omigod You Guys” from Legally Blonde (music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim)

My two dream roles:

It isn’t a hot take to rave about this song, but if I’m discussing favorite openings, I’d be remiss not to mention “Omigod You Guys.” Why do I love this song so much? I tried to break it down for myself, and it boils down to two things: the hook is perfect, and it’s catchy AF.

Since Elle Woods defies the stereotypes of being a Blonde over the course of the show, Legally Blonde gets away with embracing and exaggerating stereotypes at the beginning. It does it in such a lovable way, I don’t want Elle to stop being an “Omigod You Guys” kind of girl. Maybe she embodies stereotypes, but I love who she is. The story does such a good job of giving Elle an arc, while keeping her true to who she is from beginning to end. “Omigod You Guys” sets it up perfectly.

This melody will never, never leave my head. I don’t want it to. As far as catchy openings go, “Omigod You Guys” is high up on my list next to “It’s Your Wedding Day” and “You Don’t Even Know It.” I’m obsessed.

This is a “Courtney Take Your Break” compilation from high school productions of Legally Blonde. I love that someone made this.
